Key takeaways
- When someone asks an AI assistant "who should I call?", the answer is built from what is already public about you: your website, your profiles, your reviews and the directories that list you.
- Google says there are no special optimizations needed for its AI Overviews and AI Mode. A page has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Good regular SEO is the work.
- ChatGPT and Perplexity search with their own crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot. Block them and you can’t be shown in their search answers.
- Reviews that mention the job and the town give an AI something specific to repeat about you.
- Nobody can guarantee an AI recommendation. Check what the assistants say about you every month and keep working the basics.
How does ChatGPT decide which business to recommend?
Nobody outside these companies knows the exact recipe, and they don't publish one. What they do publish tells you enough. ChatGPT can search the web, and for local questions it can show business listings on a map; OpenAI says it may share a user's general location with "trusted third-party providers" to find nearby business listings (OpenAI Help). Gemini can pull from Google Search and Google Maps. Perplexity runs its own search index.
So the answer gets built from what's already out there about you. AI search optimization isn't a new bag of tricks. It's the local basics, done so well that a machine can't miss them.
| Assistant | Where it looks | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Its own web search (OAI-SearchBot) plus third-party local listings | Let OAI-SearchBot read your site. Keep every listing consistent. |
| Google Gemini, AI Overviews, AI Mode | Google Search and Google’s own data | Regular SEO: indexed pages, a complete Business Profile, real reviews. |
| Perplexity | Its own index (PerplexityBot) and live web pages | Let PerplexityBot read your site. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing | Claim your Bing Places listing. |
What does my website need so AI can recommend me?
AI tools read your site the way a new customer skims it: fast, hunting for facts. Make the facts impossible to miss.
- Say what you do in plain wordsOne page per main service. "Water heater repair in [Town]" beats "Quality solutions for your home." A machine can only repeat what you actually wrote.
- Name your towns"Near me" questions get answered with places. List the towns you serve, and give your biggest ones a real page.
- Answer the questions customers askEmergencies? Licensed? How do quotes work? Short, direct answers on the page are easy to quote.
- Mark it upLocalBusiness structured data with your name, phone, hours and areas hands machines the basics without guessing. Google explains it in its guide to local business structured data.

These let them read your site for search answers. GPTBot is OpenAI’s training crawler: a separate choice you can allow or block.
Do Google reviews help me show up in ChatGPT?
They are part of the public record AI reads about you, and the one part you can grow every week. A review that says "Mike fixed our AC the same afternoon in [Town]" tells a machine your trade, your town and why people like you. A pile of "great service" says a lot less.
- Ask every customer, every job. Fresh, steady reviews show you are open and busy. The scripts are in our guide on how to ask for Google reviews.
- Earn reviews worth reading. Specific jobs get specific reviews. Never write one for a customer or pay for one: Google's review content policy bans it.
- Reply to them. Replies show a real owner is home and put your own words next to theirs. See how to respond to Google reviews.
- Don’t forget the other sites. Yelp, Facebook, Angi, Nextdoor and your trade’s directories get read too. Same name, same phone, same story.
Does my Google Business Profile matter for AI search?
Yes. It's the most complete record of your business Google has: category, services, service areas, hours, photos and reviews. Google's AI features draw on Google's own data, so a thin profile is a thin answer. Everything on our Google Business Profile checklist applies here.
Then copy the same facts everywhere else. Claim Bing Places too, since Microsoft Copilot runs on Bing, and Apple Business Connect if your customers carry iPhones.
How do I check if ChatGPT recommends my business?
- Ask like a customer"Who's the best [trade] in [Town]?" "I need [service] near [Town], who should I call?" Use the words your customers use.
- Ask more than oneTry ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot. They often disagree with each other.
- Write down who shows upYou? Your competitors? What reasons does it give? The reasons tell you what it read.
- Repeat monthlyAnswers change from day to day and person to person. Watch the trend, not one answer.
Month: [Month]
Question 1: "Best [trade] in [Town]?"

Who it named instead: [names]
Question 2: "[Service] near [Town], who should I call?"
ChatGPT: [Y/N] | Gemini: [Y/N] | Perplexity: [Y/N]

What AI search tricks should I skip?
| The pitch | The truth |
|---|---|
| "We guarantee ChatGPT will recommend you" | Nobody controls what an AI says, and the answers change constantly. Anyone guaranteeing a spot is guessing. |
| Pages stuffed with "AI keywords" | Google says no special optimizations are needed for its AI features. Write for customers; the machines read the same page. |
| Fake or AI-written reviews | They break Google's review content policy. Reviews get removed, and the profile itself is at risk. |
| A different page just for bots | Showing machines something people can't see is cloaking, and it's against Google's spam policies. |
Marketers have names for this, like GEO and AEO. For a home service business it comes down to four things: a clear website, a complete profile, steady real reviews and the same details everywhere.
