How does the review gap calculator work?

It does two pieces of math with the numbers you type in, and takes the bigger answer:

  1. The count gapHow many reviews you need to have more than they do. If they have 126 and you have 38, that is 89.
  2. The rating gapHow many new 5-star reviews it takes to pull your average up to theirs. Every 5-star review moves your average a little; the more reviews you already have, the less each one moves it.
  3. Your numberWhichever is bigger. Hit it and you have more reviews and at least as good a rating. If you add how many reviews you get in a month, it also does the calendar math at that pace.

The rating math is the standard weighted average: new average = (current average × current count + 5 × new reviews) ÷ (current count + new reviews). Google shows ratings to one decimal, so the real average behind a "4.6" can be anything that rounds to it. Treat the answer as a close estimate, not a promise.

Why does the review gap matter on Google Maps?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence, and that review count and review score factor into local search ranking. It's in Google's own help page on how to improve your local ranking. Distance you can't change. Reviews you can.

Reviews also decide who gets the call once you're on the list. A homeowner comparing three plumbers on the map sees the stars and the count before anything else. A company with 40 reviews looks like a side gig next to one with 140, even if the work is the same.

How do I close the gap?

  1. Ask every customer, every job. Most happy customers never think to review you. A short text after the job is the single biggest lever. Our guide on how to ask for Google reviews has the scripts.
  2. Make it one tap. Send your direct review link, not "find us on Google". Get yours with the free review link + QR generator.
  3. Send one reminder. People mean to do it and forget. One friendly nudge, then stop.
  4. Reply to what you get. It shows the next customer someone is home. See how to respond to Google reviews.

Amplify My Business
How many 5-star reviews do I need to get a 4.8 rating?

It depends on where you start. Switch the calculator to target rating and enter your current count, current rating and 4.8. From 50 reviews at 4.5, for example, it takes 75 more 5-star reviews. The more reviews you already have, the more it takes to move the average.

Can I get my rating back to 5.0?

Only if every review is five stars. Once you have one lower review, your average can get very close to 5.0, and Google may round it to 5.0 on screen, but it can't be exactly 5.0 again.

Does Google round my rating?

Google shows ratings to one decimal place. The calculator works with the exact numbers you enter, so the answer is a close estimate.

Is the number of reviews or the rating more important?

Google says both review count and review score factor into local ranking, and it does not publish how much each weighs. Homeowners read both. The calculator gives you the number that beats them on count and matches them on rating.

Do you store the numbers I type in?

No. The math runs in your browser. Nothing is sent anywhere.
